With the release of the Commonwealth Fund study ranking the US
healthcare system last among 11 peer nations, much will be said over the
next few days about why the results are alarming, or flawed, or why one
nation is better than another. However, very little will be said about
what should actually matter most in healthcare. Are we getting diagnoses
and treatments right? In most of the world, in Nigeria included, we are not
seeing a decrease in the high number of misdiagnoses. Published studies
indicate misdiagnoses happen in close to a third of medical cases in Nigeria
The needless suffering and billions of wasted health care dollars
misdiagnosis presents should encourage patients to ask more questions
and not hesitate to seek an expert second opinion. The system itself
must change to enable physicians to spend more time with patients than
the 15 minutes or less we often see.
Costs, timeliness, and equity are all incredibly important, but when
we finally address major issues like misdiagnosis, we’ll start to see
healthcare accomplish its primary purpose to diagnose and treat
effectively.
